I want to thank all of you so much and especially to April on Chalk Talk Kindergarten for giving me a shout out.. Now look at the pic above ….. so cute!!! Throw away those jars because this is an estimation station elite. You can open the top and put in anything, any amount … and estimate the day away. It comes with a portion cup so that the children can make a better prediction with their estimation. Now, there are 3 ways to enter….

I like to send my estimation jar weekly with a different student. Then, the student will fill the jar at home with items, we will estimate and count the items in class, and send the items back with the student in a gallon sized bag. My kids love being the special student to share! :)
That looks awesome! I use teddy grahams, goldfish, candy corn, peppermints,m and m's and jellybeans.
I would put marbles, jellybeans, beans, erasers....it's really endless what you could fill the jar with!

I use a lot of different items in my estimation jar. Mostly things that go along with our unit that week ...marshmallows, candy corn, goldfish, m&ms, etc.
OMG I totally am in love with this!!! Pick me Pick me!!! We use marshmallows, gumballs, cotton balls. Many times I have parents who volunteer to bring it home and fill it. This is adorable!!

I would change it out seasonally. I can imagine using lots of shaped erasers, math supplies, cars, etc. This would make a great math work station.

I would try and change it up every couple of weeks. I would use edible things and toys. Tootsie Rolls, DumDums, Bouncy Balls, Blocks... You name it, if I had enough I would put it in there.

Cute blog! I'm on your list of followers now. I like to use anything that I have enough of to estimate - blocks, cotton, cars, erasers- whatever. But, for my Pre-K students I like to start out with large objects and as the year goes on we move to smaller and smaller objects. They are really good at estimating by the end of the year.

I estimate with everything. We actually have counting tubs we will use to estimate too. For a year I collected things from the Dollar Tree... I have a bag of little high heels, toothbrushes, socks, you name it... I got it!

Whenever we use a new math manipulative, I always include it in estimating. I think it helps them draw a connection. I also love using random items I've confiscated over the years :-)
When I start the estimation jar we use a larger item, like tennis balls, then golf balls, then ping pong balls, until they have a bit of number sense. Then we move to another shape of item, and after that our estimation jar goes along with our theme. Our math coach also has a monthly estimation jar for primary and one for intermediate that is housed in the library. Those items vary greatly from the ones in our classroom, so it's a real challenge early in the year. By the end of the year their estimation is right up there with the 1st & 2nd graders.

I'm a follower too! I have used marshmallows, marbles, popsicle sticks, rocks, etc. in my jar. I have also let my students take it home to fill it up. They love this!

I am a new follower too! I use my calendar from Lakeshore. It has a estimation jar with a dry erase board attached. I place different items in it weekly. On Monday we take a look at it. Tuesday we take a vote of how many is in there. Wednesday or Thursday we count together to see if we were close. Friday we decide what we will estimate the following week!!!

My Kindergarten Kids
We estimate in kindergarten every week. Sometimes parents send in items for "Terrific Kid." We estimate with candy, marbles, cotton balls,... just about anything! I love to estimate with a larger item, like big marshmallows and then with smaller marshmallows! :)

I love to send the estimating jar home with kiddos...They can fill it with whatever they like (50 or less at the beginning of the year, and then 100 or less later in the year). If it's wrapped and edible, we share after the lesson. Kiddos also use a 50's chart (100's chart later) to show their estimate and the actual amount and to figure out what the difference is and write the number sentence.
